Submission Guidelines
STYLE:
Essays should be previously unpublished and 800 - 1,500 words in length.
We use the Oxford comma and the em dash.
Shift+Option+- creates the em dash (—)
There are no spaces on either side of the em dash.
Essays should be clear of spelling and grammar errors.
We are open to publishing essays anonymously if you wish. Please indicate that in your submission.
TONE:
At this time, Refresh Sisterhood is looking for creative nonfiction essays, poetry, or photo stories. We would love to feature honest, heartfelt and compelling storytelling. Including lessons you are learning about deen and your relationship with Allah (swa) is okay to include as long as they relate to your story instead of trying to offer a lesson to the reader.Â
SELECTION:
Try to choose a topic with a unique approach and a common truth that applies to Muslim motherhood and family life from a Sunni perspective. Edit the piece as best as you can by reading it aloud, using Grammarly, sharing it with a friend and doing your best to adhere to the submission guidelines. Essays that make the reader feel something also have a higher chance of being accepted, so don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and bring your reader to laughter or tears.Â
Guest writers are eligible for an honorarium per essay, to be paid out the month following month. We encourage all our readers and writers to help with word-of-mouth marketing for Refresh Sisterhood so we can increase this payment per essay.
